Chapter Thirteen

I wake just as I fell asleep, with my body across Paxton’s. A quick perusal of the room reveals we are no longer in Werethea’s castle, but back in the hovel in the Olclag in our current time. Though I knew Pax and I couldn’t stay in that moment forever, while we spent the night in each other’s arms, I hoped.

Stifling a sigh, I untangle myself from Pax and stand.

He face is serene like he doesn’t want me to know how he’s feeling, and I realize there is still so much I don’t know about the fairy. Like how old is he really?

Paxton stands as well and pulls me into a side hug. “My love,” he whispers, kissing my cheek.

Tingles run the length of my body as memories of our time together rush through me. “Hi,” I say, glancing up at him.

“When we finally fell asleep,” he lifts an eyebrow and my face gets hot. “Werethea told me we need to go to the center of the Olclag and there we will find what we need to save the fairy realm.”

Profound sadness overwhelms me a moment and I wish he could remember our conversation with Werethea. About what has to happen. To me. And what he has to do. To me. As I search his eyes, it’s obvious he doesn’t. Really, it’s for the best. At least for now. “Good,” I say, clearing my throat and rolling back my shoulders.

Merida and Tiana’s laughter filters over to us.

“I have it—” Pax begins but is interrupted.

“It’s about time you both woke,” Merida says coming out of the kitchen and pulling something from her pocket. “While you were asleep, that guy Troy appeared out of thin air and gave me this letter.” At the memory, I see her face react with surprise.

“He came here?” I go to her and take the letter from her outstretched hand. “What do you mean?” I ask confused. “Where is he?” I turn in a circle, searching the hut for a sign of him, but am disappointed.

“It was weird. He wasn’t here-here, but here enough to give me the letter.” Merida sounds crazy, but no crazier than what Paxton and I just went through.

“What did he want?” I glance out the dirty window at the dreary Olclag unsure about the time. It could be midnight or midday.

“He didn’t say anything. Just gave Mer the letter before he vanished.” Tiana wipes flour from her hands onto her yellow apron. “It was bizarre and scared the crap out of me.”

“Of us,” Merida adds, tucking her hands into her back pockets.

“What does it say?” Pax leans in as I turn from the window and open the letter. There isn’t much written in his handwriting.

It’s super short and to the point. More a message than a letter.

Dearest Rory,

I haven’t forgotten about you. Be courageous. Help is on the way!

Your Friend,

Troy

I can’t help but smile. What Troy wrote isn’t urgent or even necessary, but it’s exactly what I need to hear. Warmth tingles through my body.
